Cerebrospinal fluid

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is produced by specialised tissues lining the inner chambers (known as ventricles) of the brain.

The fluid flows through the ventricles into the spaces around the brain and spinal column. CSF has the following roles:

  • Keep the brain floating within the skull to cushion it against injury
  • Removal of waste products
  • Maintain and compensate for pressure changes within the brain
